Magnet Freshman Picnic
The Magnet Freshman Picnic is one of the first Magnet Advisory Board (MAB) events of the school year and is directed towards the incoming Magnet freshmen. Hosted in early August in the week before school begins, the event helps freshmen to get accustomed to a new school and helps them befriend fellow Magnet freshmen. There are fun team-building and icebreakers planned, and attendees can interact with upperclassmen student volunteers and eat pizza. Incoming freshmen can also find their bus number and route, meet beforehand other students who ride their bus, and walk their schedules.
Magnet Fall Open House
Every fall, the Magnet program hosts an open house for all eighth graders who have an interest in applying to Wheeler. The goal is to show prospective students what our program is about and convey to them a sense of our unique culture. As this event usually garners upwards of 1000 guests, and numerous student and faculty volunteers are integral to make the night a success. The role of the Magnet Advisory Board is to work with the Magnet Administration to plan the event and to train and lead student volunteers.
Magnet Holiday Party
The Magnet Holiday Party is held on December 11. A decoration contest is held beforehand where each grade has a section of the Magnet building that they decorate. On the day of the party, various classrooms host different activities in which students can participate, including board games, movie showings, and Wii dance competitions. There is food and dancing, and it is a time that allows students to relax and let loose before a stressful week of finals. It also gets everyone to feel festive and fosters the holiday spirit.
Magnet Spring Open House
The Magnet Spring Open House is the open house for accepted students. We show prospective what Magnet is all about: the clubs, environment, and the overall Magnet spirit here at Wheeler. It is also the perfect time to really grab their attention as we compete with their home school and other Magnet programs. Attendees are able to converse with faculty members about the curriculum and unique classes offered in the Magnet program and can connect with students over classes and clubs.
STEAM Symposium
The STEAM Symposium is one of the best ways to showcase all the talent that Wheeler High School offers, as it's the heart of all our student accomplishments. Our committee is in charge of organizing the volunteers and coordinating the logistics for the STEAM Symposium. We work to make sure that all the projects are displayed properly, and that we have people staffing the rooms and the corridors just in case visiting guests get a bit turned around.
Magnet Spring Fling
The Magnet Spring Fling is the spring celebration for both the current Magnet students and the incoming freshman class and takes place from 4:00 to 7:00 pm on a Friday in April. There are games, pizza, and music at the event, and the Magnet Advisory Board enlists several MAB members and other volunteers to decorate the Magnet hall and courtyard with a beach/luau theme. We set up speakers in the courtyard to blast music and allocate several rooms for games and food. The rising Magnet freshmen also come later on Friday, and we arrange an activity for them, typically a student talent show to display the diversity and talent at Wheeler Magnet as well as to welcome them into the Magnet family.
Magnet Learning Links
Magnet Learning Links is a yearlong peer tutoring program available to Magnet students. Magnet students sign up to tutor others before and after school, and sessions are held twice a week. The program helps students get help from others who have been through a class before and understand what it is like to take that class. Service hours are awarded to the tutors every time they come.
Magnet Freshman Tutoring
The Freshman Mentoring Committee coordinates lunches for the magnet freshmen and upperclassmen, which will occur about two to three times per semester. These sessions act as an environment for the freshman to connect with the upperclassmen and establish relationships between the two groups. We work to give the freshmen more senior mentors to help them with any questions or concerns they may have during their freshmen year, as well as to just establish friendships between the two groups.
Magnet Fix-It Day
Magnet Fix Day is held the Saturday morning before the Fall Open House and again before the Spring Open House. This morning, students and their families can volunteer can to help clean up the magnet building and prepare it for the upcoming open house so that it gives a good first impression to prospective students. Magnet Fix it Day is also a great service hour opportunity, almost up to six hours at a time. Also, it provides the opportunity to interact with friends and colleagues from all grade levels that volunteer. It is important that our students attend a safe and clean environment, and this volunteer opportunity is a perfect way to showcase Wheeler Magnet as an inviting environment.
